You should leave a light on so that the hens get up to 18 hours of light a day. You could leave them on all the time but that’s not excellent for the birds. They do need some rest. Also make sure they have plenty of water. If you have an outlet in your coop you can get a metal waterer and place it on a heated base to keep the water from freezing. You also need to up the protein in their diet in the winter. You can do that by getting game bird feed or dry cat food. They like dry cat food.

Well, it all depends on the age of your chickens. Since you said they can lay eggs and it is winter, leave the light on all of the time. It doesn’t matter if you are raising a chick or hen, they NEED warmth. (It would be a lot better for them if you used a large lamp and a high wattage, also, more than just one lamp).
You also need to place warm blankets or towels on them frequently, and check the water supply whenever you can. No matter where you live, the water could freeze and your chickens will be dehydrated. It is also very vital to give your chickens hot towels and or blankets so they don’t freeze to death. If you can, place the chickens in your garage. Make sure they are always really warm, alright? I have a 3-4 month ancient baby chicken and I frequently question questions. This is my first time owning a chicken! Well, I hope this info was really, very helpful to you! Excellent luck!
