I’m getting two hens for pets, but mostly for the fresh eggs, and they’ll live in my backyard. Ive googled chicken coops and how to build them yourself, but I only found books to buy on it…Does anyone know how to build your own coop for two hens. Or if I should just buy one? And anything else I might need to know about chickens. Thanks so much:)

Make sure it’s kept in a safe place in the yard to keep them away from predators.
Okay there is sooo much you need to know…like about medication if they get sick and fleas and stuff. there water things and changing the hay.
we use an ancient shed for our chickens. but there is a lot to know, its mostly a learning experience, but they are A LOT of work
make sure it’s well protected from dog’s or racoon’s, huge enough for a roost and nest’s below. probably cheaper to buy one. but you can get plans at the library about what tool’s you need and supplies. excellent luck!
frame out a small coop about 5 X 2, and make a hinged door in the back so u can clean it and get the eggs and then go off the coop and make a pen as huge as u want and frame it out and then staple chicken wire on it and then in the corners place boards across so they can roost. then place straw in the coop. also make sure u make a door so u can get into the pen.
For just 2 hens you can get a rabbit cage to place them in at night and let them roam in your yard if it is fenced during the day.Place a cover on the top to keep rain off of them.Really don’t know how many eggs you will get without a rooster.Excellent luck.
any sort of outhouse will do. Keep in mind you will be needing to clean out the manure. A small space such as 6′ x 8′ will be enough for a dozen chickens so your space doesnt need to be huge at all. Will they be free ranging? Having them go out in the yard to eat insects would be nice. Make them more pleased too. You’ll want your outhouse close to the house as you’ll be going out there several times a day. Be sure to have wire fencing around. Also, you may need a building permit if you were to build an outhouse. Silly, I know. I wouldnt worry about that though, who really checks up on these things.
You can build a simple structure using a cardboard box. Problem with that though is it has fragile walls. It will probably break down on ya especially if it gets rained on. They only need a small shelter to keep them out of the elements (wind, cold, rain). So whatever you can muster. A tarpaulin, a box, and wire fencing is excellent.
If you want to build something structural, you can do an A-frame. It just needs 4′ by 4′ area at the bottom. You build one by putting the 2′ x 4′ beams diagonally against each other like a tee pee. Cover it with tarp. You dont need a floor. Pretty simple right? And then have fencing around it you can step over. Have it be 30" tall. The fence would be that of chicken wire. Stretched out between wooden beams planted in the ground.
Dont buy a cage for them. they like to dig and peck at the ground. These are also known as batteries and is what large-scale businesses use. Just make a simple wooden boxed (or A-frame) structure with fencing around it =).
