I gave away my dog with a list of terms for care of the dog. New owners aren’t following it. What can I do?
What can I legally do? We have tried to buy him from them (we gave him away for free) and they won’t. They are coming quite close to abuse. They chain him up to tree with a chain that is 3 feet long OR lock him up in an ancient small chicken coop.

Call your local Animal Shelter.
Personally, if that didn’t work – I’d sneak over there and grab/hide him until you found a better home. [g] (psst, that’s not legal though.)You may have given a "list of terms" but I doubt anything was signed so you wouldn’t have much luck in that regard. (Verbal works too. Did they "agree": to the terms? But much harder to prove.)
You can call the local animal league and question their advice.
Report him stolen and tell the police you know where he is. If they are abusing him, it’s up to you to get him back and find a proper home. Or, you can just go there and get him when they’re not home.
If they signed a contract with you that included terms of care then you may have recourse. If they didn’t, even though you made a list of terms, you may not have recourse.
You may be able to call the SPCA and talk to them about the dog’s current care. Since you’re no longer the owner, this may be the best you can do.
Legally the only thing you can do is report this to the local animal center and the humane society. The fact is the owner don’t have to follow your list of terms of care after you have given them the dog. Legally it’s not your dog anymore but if you report it, there’s a chance they’ll lose custody of the dog and you can reclaim the dog.
take it to the authorities… if u told them to follow rules and they arent and they didnt pay for it then its technically still urs
There isn’t anything that you really can do. If they are abusing him you can call animal control. You should have really interviewed them before giving the dog away. This sort of thing does happen.
Did they sign anything? if they did you have legal obligation to get the dog back or take them to court
call animal control if its truly abuse…if not…there is nothing you can do
next time, dont give your dogs away.
why did you give him up to start with? Did you have these people sign an agreement about what you expected with his care? Call animal control and see what they have to say
You can’t do anything. You gave your dog away.
Sadly, it probably ISN’T animal abuse. Idiots need to read up on laws before pointing the legal finger. Yes, in all honesty, it is abuse. Anyone with a brain could see that. But LEGALLY, ALL a dog needs is water, food, and a three sided shelter. A dog does NOT legally need exercise. A dog does NOT legally need training, or even like. Food, water, and a three sided shelter. As long as a dog has those three things, then being chained up is not animal abuse.
EDIT: Ok, California laws consider chaining abuse. EXCELLENT. Laws are different in different areas, so call your animal control. Sadly, most laws are the same though when it comes to the basics. In the eyes of the law, dogs are objects to be owned, not living creatures.
Even if you gave the dog away for free did you not have a contract along with your list of terms that they had to sign?
I have written in my contracts that if anything is not followed within the contract that I can reposes the pup/dog any time within its lifetime.
If you do not have such a contract, call your local dog officer, humane , ASPCA or shelter and give them the information that you believe the animal is being mistreated.
Without a contract there is small that you can do other than report the abuse/neglect to the authorities.
Unless you have a SIGNED contract stating that if they didnt follow certain things that the dog would have to be turned back over to you, there is nothing you can do. If you feel the dog is being abused in any way, report it to the Humane Society or ASPCA or even animal control.
If there is NO legit, signed contract, there is NOTHING that YOU can do. Why did you give your dog away to start with? All you can do at this point is to forget it.
if you have it on a contected you take them to courted and try and git your dog back i’ve seen iton tv ever other week? p.s. take some pictures and video of them do wronge to or with dog
If they’re abusing the animal, the authorities need to be contacted. Why did you give your dog away in the first place? Call the Sheriff’s Dept and clarify that you owned the dog, gave him away, found out the dog is now being abused and see what they can do, If you can provide photos of the abuse, it would prove your case.
If they signed a contract, you can take legal action. Call your lawyer.
If they didn’t, call your local shelter and clarify that someone you know is abusing their dog, give them the address & they’ll send a peace officer to see if the dog’s really abused or not, if it is, they’ll get the dog from them. After that, you can rescue him back from the shelter so that he isn’t euthanized (shelter dogs are place down if they aren’t adopted within a week).
Do your best to rescue your dog! And next time, research the person you’re going to give your dog to well, or just don’t get a dog unless you’re plotting on keeping it until its very last day!
Really, while Like is a GSD made real points, being chained up all day, especially to a 3′ long chain, can be considered abuse. New laws in my area (California) state that a dog can not be chained up for more than a few hours (4 I reckon, but don’t quote me) in a 24 hour period.
And if you call animal control, being locked up in a possibly perilous ancient chicken coup could be considered abuse. So call them and see what happens. Worst, they can’t do anything, best, they remove the dog or legally require them to provide better accommodations.
If not, do what another answerer suggested, go get your dog from them and hide him away. When they come to accusing you of taking it act appalled and mad that that lost your dog.
Let this be a lesson to you though, people are a**holes. They don’t always do what they say they will. So next time make sure you have a signature.
ADD:
I know how dogs are seen. But my point was that if they are laws in California about it, maybe there are laws about it in her area as well. Inference is incredible, try it. It’s better than telling her she just has to sit there and watch people abuse her dog.
