Years ago, I had the same inclination. I consulted our county Farm Bureau for information on raising chickens. They were a wealth of information, as was the local feed store where I bought the chicks, the mash, and all the hardware. I raised Barred Rocks. Since they were a heavy bird and did not glide well I was able to keep them cooped up and they didn’t disturb my neighbors, too much. They laid very large, brown eggs that were too huge to fit in most jumbo egg cartons. They did attract some varmints though and I had to make sure they were in the coop at sundown or they would be targets for the possums, raccoons, coyotes and others carnivores.
It was a excellent time for the first year. Worth the effort if you like eggs. It became a bit of drudgery after that.
    Excellent luck.

We had a chicken coop a few years ago, and we’re thinking of build another one this year. We have a 10×10 dog cage. We will place a glass top on it, so the raccoons can’t get in it. Chickens need to have a place to rest at night and lay eggs. My friend uses Rubbermaid tubs on their sides and hays in it. I am thinking that’s what I will do this year. It’s simpler than building one out of wood. I am counting my eggs before they come out… Excellent luck and pleased farm life!

if you already have a structure all you need to do is build a fenced in yard off the structure. just cut a small opening in the building so they can get in and out. just remember chickens cannot take a lot of heat so you will need some ventilation. also chickens like to roost up at night, you bcan build these out of 2 by 2"sfrom the wall to the floor as wide as you need . hope this helps, excellent luck.
