How to build and maintain a Chicken Coop

raising chickens for pets/eggs?

We are going to get some chicks soon — after we build a chicken coop. Any nice tales, advice, etc. I am reading up and they seem honestly simple. Also, I have always adored chickens and ducks. They seem to have real sweet personalities (some of them anyway). My ducks were really cuddly with people.
I like both answers to my question so far but I want to see a couple more answers if anyone has any. Thanks. I’m excited to get our first chicks!

You will want the excitement to continue ,not only when the chicks arrive but as you watch them grow & turn into layers.Basic requirements are food & water, comfortable housing that gives, warmth, safety from inclement weather & predators, timely attention to any problem that arises.Last but not the least spend some time just observing how things go & noting progress in your birds.Whenever i have a moment to spare i make the rounds of my pens, that house hens, rabbits & pigeons, observation has been my greatest teacher.

Best way to keep chicks alive: a heat lamp and make sure you wipe their butts when the poop sticks. I am serious. The first week is the most critical–so keep them close at hand. Dip their beaks in water when you get them, keep their butts clean and keep them warm. Buy the medicated feed for at least a month. The chicken coop can be built later since the chicks can’t go outside until 8 weeks anyway. Chickens are simple–just make sure they have plenty of space and you feed them + water. Excellent luck!

When you build the coop, place it up so that you can get a wheel barrow underneath for cleaning. A opening wide double door too. A small side door can be open for the chickens to enter and exit. I like Buff Orpingtons. I just got 30 chicks last week. They are Black Star, New Hampshire, and Buff Orpingtons. I got all pullet chicks.
