PLEASE HELP!!!!! Yesterday my sister and my friend went to go clean our chicken coop and when they opened the door all of the 15 bantams (chickens) were dead. (We had 3 full grown,5 medium size, and 7 baby chicks.) Every chicken was dead and there was a hole in the screen of the window. The hole was about 2 or 3 of the average person’s fist. The animal took 5 babies and 1 medium sized one, but killed all of them and also took about 3 other heads. We also have ducks and one of them is missing, and there are feathers all over my property. Please help me!!!! P.S My family is devastated we really loved the chickens and have had them (the huge ones) for over a year. Although we have lost some along the way we felt that because these survived they we the fastest and strongest. I am just so upset that it wiped out the entire coop and my parents say we may not get any more and I really want more but I want them to be safe. Thank you so much and God Bless You!!!!

like the other people said it sounds like a fox or raccoon or even a weasel. dont use poultry wire because thats not predator proof but instead use hardware cloth over the windows. its also a excellent thought to use a padlock on the door with a key and hang the key right next to the lock. this way the predators never know to place the key in the lock. im sorry about yu chickens and i hope your ducks will stay safe
btw you should set some large none kill traps around the property because who ever it was will be back. when you catch it you can relocate it to a forest were it will not come back
Sounds like a fox did it to me.
Am so sorry for your loss, it sounds like a fox I’m worried, they will kill everything but only take enough to eat, the only way to stop it is to make the house fox proof.
Most likely predator -COON!!!!
Nice of you to set a dinner table for it.
A fox.
They are the worse.
Its obviuolsy simple access for the fox, if your going to buy more then buy a safer and huge cage.
You’re not in the Rothbury area are you?
Definatley fox i’m worried. My neigbours have chickens in their garden, and have made the coup fox proof, question your local pet supplier what advice they can give you to make your chicken coup safe.
Yup, fox!
Get a guard dog to stop it, thats what i done, but my dog got frightened of the fox and is now a house dog lol
Erica; Which country you’re in could have a bearing on what possibly got to ye chickens.
I’d also like a lot more clear information on that hole. Even a photograph. " 2 or 3 of the average persons fist " doesn’t really tell me much, I’m worried.
Go back and take a really close look at that hole, will ye, please? Look from inside and out. There might be a hair caught there.
Regards preventing this sort of thing? First thing is to set out with the positive assurance that it Is going to happen. Work out what creatures are available to make it happen. Then set up measures to exclude them from the chickens environment. Electric fence and a couple of tunnel traps, properly set. That way, you get the pred’ before the pred’ even has a chance to get up close and personal with the chickens.
Prevention is always better than allowing a situation to arise for which there is no cure.
we live in fife scotland and my neighbours have just got some chickens which i don’t mind but all the people at my work and friends have gone "omg" rats. seemingly they attract rats as they come foraging for the chickens left over food and they kill your chickens.
