i am looking to buy 20-40 chicks this spring and i am trying to find what is the best breed for me. Right now i have 13 mongrel laying hens and a cock that is also a mongrel. I live in North Dakota where it can get very cold (down to minus 63F) but i have a heated and insulated coop. I let all of my Chickens free range.

You should look at the breeds and see which ones match closest to what you want them for. If it’s for eggs some of the more reliable layers I have are Rhode Island Reds, Bard Rocks, Black Austrolope, Wyandotte and Ameraucana. For shell color I also added Marans and Welsummers. But when you come right down to it, the mongrels are usually better at both foraging and laying, they also tend to be healthier.
