We are getting a chicken coop this Spring and this would be my first chickens as well. We live in VT so it would need to be able to survive cold winters.

I would get a larger breed of chicken, because the bantams act a lot more protective of each other. For you first breed i would go with Orpingtons or Wyandottes. These two breeds are one of the nicer breeds. If you want a larger breed Jersey Giants are also really nice. All of these can survive cold winters. I hope this helped and excellent luck
