I do not have the three breeds you listed but I am familiar with them.
I do have heavy breeds of comparable size Plymouth Rocks(Barred and Partridge), Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshire Reds, a mix of numerous unknown breeds and crossbreeds and many various crosses of all of the above. I have two Black Australorps but they are only chicks yet.
All of my chickens can fit themselves through welded wire cattle panels that have 7 by 7 in. squares, even the largest of my roosters in a pinch.
If your ladder is a min. of 8 in. wide and 10 in. tall they will be able to maneuver it fine. I personally would give them more room, but we are talking bare minimum right now.
I would probably give them 10 in. wide by 12 in. tall and no larger than 14in tall by 10in. wide.
I have a buff Orpington hen that is 19 ½ in tall and from one feather to the other without squishing 9 ½ in. wide and weighs 8 pounds 13 oz.
The Australorp was developed in Australia out of Orpingtons, the AUSTRALian ORPingtons. So no, they are not small birds!
In order of size Black Australorps, Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn. The Rhode Island Red isn’t smaller by much it’s nearly a tie.
According to Murray McMurray Hatchery;
http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/category/standard_breed_chicks.html
Black Australorps “They are huge birds, cockerels weighing 6 to 8 pounds at maturity and pullets 5 to 7.”
(they don’t say on the website but in the hard copy catalog buff Orpingtons are listed Pullets 8 to 10 lbs Cockerel 10 to 12 lbs.)
The Pearl-White Leghorn “These pullets weigh about 4 lbs. at maturity,“
Murray McMurray did not list sizes for their Rhode Island Reds on their website. But in the hard copy catalog Pullets 6.5 lbs Cockerel 8.5 lbs.
According to Cackle Hatchery;
http://www.cacklehatchery.com/page2.html
Rhode Island Reds “Cockerel 7-8 lbs Pullets 5-6 lbs”
the australop is the smaller of the 3, they are excellant layers also. not certian but if the rir hen weighs 5 to 5 1/2 pounds grown, then the australop will weigh 4 1/2 to 5 pounds grown. they are a littl smaller. and i would not have a white leghorn
it really dont matter how huge the ladder it is they get up it any ways….. australorps are the smallest then the rhode island reds and so forth
