How to build and maintain a Chicken Coop

What kind of animal is living under my chicken coop?

I have a chicken coop that sits on the ground and the boards go across as a flooring and sit on the ground. I noticed a tunnel leading from the side one day and thought nothing of it but when I chose to walk around the back side i saw a black/white/brown blur crawl into another side. I didn’t get a excellent look at it but I know it has a bushy tail and it definatly isn’t a cat. I also didn’t see rings around its tail so i don’t reckon its a raccoon. Are my chickens in danger of being eaten? By the looks of it, the animal has strong nails and teeth because its borough is like a foot deep and like 3 feet wide. HELP PLEASE

Take out your chickens and smoke him out of his hole most stores sell smoke bombs. When he comes out you shoot him before he get to eat some raw chicken then after hes out and you kill him place 2 layers of chicken wire around the base of your New chicken coop.

The website has a link to see if you have a store near you.

    They have books google some.

You should read before you buy.

it might be a racoon, badger, or something else. Hopefully its not a wolveriene. Or it could be simply a dog or cat

I would get a few locks to place on the coop. I would be extra carefull just in case

It could be an opossum. I would call animal control because I don’t know if it would hurt you chicken. excellent luck – Smiley

It sounds like a badger to me. Chicken isn’t usually in their diet, but that doesn’t mean they won’t eat one if the opportunity presents itself. If it is then you might want to call Animal Control to come get it, because trying to get it out yourself will most likely result in pain and blood for you (those darn things are seriously ornery). If it’s not a badger then it could be a ferret (again you might want to call animal control). If your chickens start to disappear then it’s a fox and you might want to get your chickens to safe place and flush it out with your dog (but please get the dog before the fight starts or else it will become inhumane. My grandpa used to just let the hound Kojak fight the poor small fox and it was brutal. I was traumatized). If you don’t have a dog you should get one because they usually keep whatever animals like that at bay (but you might want to train him not to eat chickens, it’s not a small process).

Anyway once you get whatever it is out, plug the hole so nothing else can take up residence there.

Something in the mustelid family: badger, weasel, polecat, domestic ferret, etc. Your chickens are in danger, as these animals all eat chickens in the wild. It’s their favorite. If he’s excited, their tails will bush out. They also tunnel a LOT. It’s how they get to their prey, and what they do for fun. So I’d make sure this animal can’t get in, or call animal control to come set up a live trap to remove him from your land.
