Where are my newly bought chickens in Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town?

I bought 2 chickens and some feed from the farm and the lady said they’d be place in my chicken coop- but they never appeared and my feed bins empty even though when I return to the shop it says I already have some. One of my chickens died because I couldn’t feed it and I had to sell the other one. This happened twice- where have my chickens gone?
